Full Description
Linux is the most exciting development today in the UNIX world -- and some would say in the world of the PC-compatible. A complete, UNIX-compatible operating system developed by volunteers on the Internet, Linux is distributed freely in electronic form and for low cost from many vendors. Its software packages include the X Window System (X11R6); TCP/IP networking (including SLIP, PPP, and NFS support); popular software tools such as Emacs and TeX; a complete software development environment including C, C++, Perl, Tcl/Tk, and more; libraries, debuggers, multimedia support, scientific and database applications, and much more. Developed first on the PC, it has been ported to many other architectures, and a POSIX-compliant version has even been developed.
Running Linux explains everything you need to understand, install, and start using the Linux operating system. This includes a comprehensive installation tutorial, complete information on system maintenance, tools for document development and programming, and guidelines for network and Web site administration.
New topics in the second edition include:
- Printer configuration, management, and use
- Configuration of network clients for NFS and NIS
- Expanded information on configuring a wide range of hardware devices
- Updated configuration information for the kernel and XFree86

Finishing reading Running Linux, Ed.2.
I will read it once more for a course on the Web where this great book (Bible) is used.
I thank my nephew for having presented me this great OS (he graduated from Berkeley).
I am very enthusiastic about applying the knowledge I gain from this book!

I have the first edition which is excellent. I highly
recommend it.
I saw the second edition in my bookstore and debated about
buying it, but decided not to when I noticed it didn't seem
to have the nice "lay-flat binding"...pity.

Two years ago (when I bought the 2nd Edition) this
book was the "bible" of Linux users. It is still
very good, but it is rapidly becoming dated by
the tremendous pace of change for Linux. I just
searched the O`Reilly website for a later edition
but no luck so far. Please, O'Reilly, put out
a 3rd edition!

(For 1st Edition):
"There has been an increasing thirst for information about Linux which hasn't been fully quenched by a book...until O'Reilly & Associates got together with Lar Kaufman and Matt Welsh, the Coordinator of the Linux Documentation Project and the author of
Linux Installation & Getting Started, to take on this project. Unostentatiously titled
Running Linux, this book is a perfect blend of polished knowledge, organized in an easy-to-grasp package, like most books in the O'Reilly line.
